What is it?
A sensory tool that allows students who need to chew—in order to calm, self-regulate, and/or focus—a safe way to meet that need.
Where is it found?
It might be on a necklace or with an individual student.
How do I use it?
You don’t. Simply let them use it during class if it helps them self-regulate.
For older students:
Consider offering chewing gum, hard pretzels, Skittles, or Starbursts. They provide the same proprioceptive and deep pressure input, but in a format that is more age appropriate for school aged students and can be less stigmatizing than chewies for older students.
