Weighted Blanket

Weighted Blanket

What is it?

A tool to provide deep touch pressure, which can be calming to some students.

Where is it found?

In a chill zone or sensory corner.

How do I use it?

Students might seek sensory input, and using a weighted lap pad might provide that input and allow them to stay seated. Using a weighted blanket in a chill zone can help ease anxiety.

Suggestion

Putting this into a schedule is extremely helpful for students who are craving deep pressure. Five minutes or so of being under a weighted blanket after a high arousal activity, like gym class, recess, or lunch, can help a student regroup before needing to do work again. They are expensive, but also relatively easy to make in a “quilt” form with dried beans sewn into fabric squares.
