Growing Together as a Class

Think of co-generating residency goals with students as a growing tree.

Celebrate and discover what’s already known and just hiding underneath, such as students’ prior knowledge and experience of the art form.

Ask: “What do you know about this art form?”

Example Answers:

  • “I know that dance can tell a story.”
  • “I like to color with Sharpies.”
  • “I can speak loud on a stage.”
  • “I know how to record videos on my phone.”

Create a community agreement on how to hold a safe and supportive environment.

Ask: “What goals can we set to make this learning possible? What are your goals for this particular class / art form / time together?”

Example Answers:

  • “To be positive in class.”
  • “I want to work on my listening skills.”

Identify what students would like to learn from the art form.

Ask: “What would you like to know or learn about _______?”

Example Answers:

  • “I want to be able to do ______!”
  • “I want to learn different styles of _____.”
