Personalizing Your Notepad
Contribution de David Del Grasso
Description
In this activity, students receive and customize a notepad for use throughout the residency, fostering a sense of ownership and creative freedom. Retrieving and returning notepads to a predetermined place becomes a ritualized activity in future sessions.
instructions
- Provide each student with a notepad.
- Share how their notepads will be used throughout the residency. Explain that their notepad is a personal place to create and express freely. Invite students to personalize the cover of their notebook. This could be done with words, images, or abstract designs. You can also provide a directive related to the residency, such as: “Think of a silly word and include it in your design.”
- Provide materials for customizing. Notebooks can be embellished with a variety of materials including markers, pencils, stamps and stickers, dot markers, washi tape, or pre-cut shapes and images.
- At the close of the activity, explain how using them will be a part of the routine, including getting them out and putting them away. Then collect the notebooks, and put them in a predetermined place.
Transition vers l'activité
You can begin by sharing an example of a personalized notepad and explaining how you use it as a tool in your creative process. .
Transition hors de l'activité
The returning of the notebooks to their predetermined space acts as a transition.
Aménagement de la salle de classe
Students can work in their seats or if it’s available/more comfortable, students can work on the floor.
Supports/Matériaux adaptatifs/Outils
- When personalizing the notebooks, have a variety of materials available so that students are empowered to choose the ones they are drawn to, and are most comfortable using.
- Share a visual agenda to illustrate how using the notepads will be a part of the residency routine.
- If you are providing a directive for the design, provide ample time for students to plan. You may want to have students turn and talk to one another to share their ideas. Students may want to write their words on a separate piece of paper to practice before adding it to their notepad.
Rôles possibles pour les professionnels de la classe
- Help to distribute materials.
- If needed, add student names on the notepads.
- Work with individual students who need support.
Réglages pour l'instruction à distance
If it’s available, you can work with Classroom Professionals to have notepads provided to students in the classroom or at home.
Lead students in creating their own notebook using (scrap) paper they have at home.
Lead students in creating a digital “notepad” using an application like Google Docs or Google Slides that students can personalize and keep adding to throughout the residency.
